Fr. Matt –

 

It appears that the discrepancy between the payroll of some of the international priests may be due to the fact that they have the option of opting out of the Social Security/Medicare system.  This requires a certain number of quarters of working tin the system (I think 16) before being eligible for benefits at age 65.  If one ops out of the system, it would have an impact of not taxing meal/lodging or salary.  It is highly recommended that the priest find a local CPA to handle their taxes.

This was mentioned in the memo sent to parishes where international priests would reside (see attached.)
